Truck Toppers Care

This is for our fellow truck lovers! Adding a topper to your truck is a great investment. In addition to increasing your truck’s cargo-holding capacity, toppers also give your truck a nice custom look. After purchasing truck toppers from our Twin Cities showroom, we want to provide information on how to care for them.

Truck toppers are relatively easy to care for, so here’s the truck topper care 101. Once you know these few things, you’ll be good to go!

Washing Your Truck Topper
Any fresh paint on your truck topper should be treated with some extra TLC for the first 30 days. It is fine to use a power washer or a touch-less car wash during this “paint curing” period, but avoid anything that would rub on the paint, such as microfiber cloths, brushes, etc.

In addition, be sure you do not wax your topper within the first 60 days. After 60 days, you can wash and wax your topper as you would your truck, using the same products.

Paint
For repairing minor nicks and scratches, you can use clear fingernail polish as the base coat. Once that dries, you can use touch-up paint to cover the area. Wait until the paint is fully cured, and then you can use rubbing compound and polish to regain the proper finish.

Vinyl, Plastic and Rubber Components
You can apply a UV protection that does not contain petrochemicals, petroleum distillates or silicone oils.

Locks
To keep from attracting dirt and grime build up, we recommend using lithium-based grease. If using penetrating oils in the lock cylinders, you should always follow up with lithium grease.

Gas Struts
If necessary, clean these with water only.  Do not use lubricants or solvent cleaners on the shafts of gas struts.

Snow and Ice Removal
Always brush off snow and ice. Do not use a scraper on the cap or the rear door glass as this can cause scratching.

Hopefully, these tips will keep your truck toppers looking great. With proper care and cleaning your topper will last for many years to come.

  1. Thanks for the tips about how to care for your truck cap. We live in an area that can get quite a bit of snow and my friend's truck cap helps to prevent a lot of snow and ice buildup in his truck bed. I'll have to look into getting one eventually. http://www.jandccampersnj.com/Truck_Caps_Cream_Ridge_NJ.html
